Ashlyn: “me and [classmate] broke up today”
Peg: “huh?! what happened?”
Ashlyn “[classmate] made me mad, so I said, “it’s over!“.”
Peg:  “oh…are you okay?”
Ashlyn: “No, I’m kind of sad now.”
Peg: “I’m sure you guys will be okay tomorrow.”

Ashlyn’s growing up so fast. The dialogue seems too mature for my 5 year old. Luckily for me, the classmate is a girl. hehehe

ashlyn and summer

Summer: “Crap. Crap. Crap…my baby’s crapping.”
Peg:  “what?!”
Summer: “see….look…crapping.”
(knocking her doll’s hands together)
Peg: “Ohhhhh, clapping!” *laughs* “That’s good, SumSum!”

Have a great weekend!

With all that has been going on, I’m finally able to sit down in front of my laptop to update. *whew!*
Let’s see….where to begin?

jacked bangs

Last Friday Summer got her bangs trimmed butchered. She kept moving her head and swinging her legs while sitting on the bathroom counter (kicking me in the gut several times). In a moment of impatience and frustration, I tugged on the razor-comb-thingy and hacked off a bit too much. Poor kid looks like a fool now. *sigh* Of course I still find her cute…in a goofy way. HAHAHA! It’s a good thing we had already taken our holiday portraits.

yummy house

Friday night, the usual families gathered at Grace and James’ for dinner and family fun. Grace and I picked up a gingerbread house kit and a gingerbread man kit for the kids.
The kits are awesome…everything was pre-cut, pre-shaped, and prepared for you. Not like the good ol’ days, when I remembered watching a friend’s mom make one out of graham crackers….carefully stacking them (as you would if you were to make a house with playing cards).
The kids abandoned the gingerbread house for the gingerbread man….leaving the house for me and Sue to complete. The kids had a blast decorating their own gingerbread man, and it was fun seeing each child’s creativity materialize.

I found Summer’s gingerbread man most amusing…it had like 10 pounds of candy on it and on closer inspection, I discovered that she put corn niblets (a couple of strays from dinner that she found on the table) for eyes. HAHAHAHAHA!

Saturday, Aric, the kiddies, and I ran some errands, had lunch, and did some Xmas shopping.

female asian bloggers

Saturday night I went to dinner at Honda-Ya with FAB (female asian bloggers)….most of whom I’ve already met, and some that I couldn’t wait to meet. I had so much fun and LOVED everything about the whole evening…great food in the company of incredible and charming ladies, the most adorable lil’ baby, sharing stories, partaking in a gift exchange (and scoring a pair of gorgeous Bellaceti earrings!), laughing and smiling till my face hurt, yummy desserts at Zovs’, and feeling warm and happy all night. I think that’s what really stood out to me…that I instantly felt very comfortable with these gals…and that’s a rare and beautiful thing.

Dinner reservations were at 5:30, so I told Aric that I would be home around 10pm (over estimating the time), but I didn’t get home until after 11pm….and that’s only because Zov’s closed and they were practically kicking us out. I’m looking forward to our next gathering. I think we should change the name to CFAB (crafty/creative female asian bloggers)…as that accurately describes this bunch.

Sunday, Aric left bright and early for Formula D. The kiddies and I went to Costco, Toys R Us, Linens N’ Things, Bed Bath & Beyond, and some other stores for gifts. Enduring 5 hours of crappy customer service, rude patrons, parking lot rage, and my restless and impatient kiddies, my mood turned completely sour. The holidays really do bring out the worst in some people. We spent the rest of our Sunday at home.

The past week or so has been the busiest for me. Between all the holiday cards, Xmas shopping, gift wrapping, sick kiddies (or kiddies in general), crafts (barrettes and blankets), laundry and keeping house, preparing and packing for our NorCal trip, I’ve barely had any time to come up for air. With the exception of 2 more people, I’m pretty much done with my Xmas shopping. YAY!

Ashlyn has a performance at school tomorrow. It’s called, “It’s a Small World Holiday Musical”. Kids are encouraged to wear festive holiday attire, holiday costumes (elf), or clothing to reflect their family’s ancestral heritage. I debated on whether I should send Ashlyn to school in her Mulan costume (HAHAHAHA!), but opted to dress her in her xi pao instead. Should be fun.

May 16

Summer’s birthday weekend was great…*YAWN*..but I’m so tired. I’ve gotten an average of 5 hours of sleep a night since Thursday (the longest being Sunday night of 6 hours).

birthday girl and her sister

Friday night highlights:
- dinner and Chuck E Cheese for Summer with my father-in-law and Netty

summer, peg, em, and aric

Saturday highlights:
- a trip to the Farmer’s Market at UCI
- Em’s birthday dinner at M-Grill
- party prepping with Wil till 3am

my family

Sunday highlights:
- Summer’s birthday party, Greg’s act, water fountains, lots of pictures, and wonderful friends
- Mother’s Day dinner with Brian, Grace, Sue, and the kiddies

Planning and prepping for Summer’s party took a lot out of me (a carnival theme and junk food complete with hot dogs, hot links, sausages, nachos, cotton candy, kettle corn, and caramel apples). Luckily, her party was a success and I’m really relieved it’s over. *whew!*

Birthday parties have evolved since I was a kid. Growing up, we didn’t have much money nor did we have many parties…but when we did, we there were no games, prizes, or favors. We had some soda, chips, cake, and maybe ice cream. We’d invite some school friends, chinese-school friends, and some neighborhood friends over. We ran amuck (indoor and out)…and I remember it being SOOOO MUCH FUN!

I feel like the caliber of planning/prepping for a birthday party, nowadays, is comparable to a small wedding…or at least in the area where we live. You have to consider themes, food, decorations, games/entertainment, and favors.
And kiddies are hard to impress too! Case in point – after our pinata got busted open, I watched in disbelief as the children picked through what they wanted and tossed back what they didn’t. Aren’t you supposed to grab as much as you can as fast as you can and stuff ‘em into your bag?!
In the end, Aric told Ashlyn to pick up everything left on the ground and put it in her bag, which she replied, “but I don’t want those.” *hrmph!*

THANK YOU to all our friends who took time away from their mothers on Mother’s Day to celebrate with us. A special THANKS to Tony, Wing, Em, and Wil who came down from NorCal to be with us. *HUGS TO ALL!*

monthly collage of summer
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my cutie-pie, SUMMER!
We love you very much!

current weight: 26 pounds 8 ounces
current length: 35 inches

OMG! I can’t believe Summer is 2 already!….even though most people think she’s 3 years old (including us), and we treat her as such. Looking at the above collage, it totally blows me away how drastically she had changed over the course of a year. *cry*
Again, I’ve neglected to post her monthly updates on time. Since her last update, she has grown an inch, gained 4 ounces, and currently wears size 2-3T clothes and size 7 shoe.

grabby

Summer is quite the chatty one. Not only has she advanced to three-syllable words (ie…”butterfly”, “medicine”, “camera”, “vitamins”), but has started forming complete sentences. There are too many to list, but most are pretty basic. The sentences she says most often are: “that’s mine!”, “give me that!” or “give that to me!”, “i want that!”, “i can do it!” or “i’ll do it!”, “be quiet!”, “don’t touch it!”, “let’s go upstairs/downstairs/out!”, etc..etc… As you can tell, she’s very demanding and commanding. She’s also learning some chinese. YAY!
I really love this stage…it’s a wonderful feeling when the blank stares are replaced by acknowledgement and understanding. It’s great to be able to communicate with one another, and I’m getting a big kick out of hearing what she has to say. Of course there are times when she’s tired and reverts back to the incoherent mumbling and whining.

laughing

We’ve already entered the “terrible twos”. She’s aggressive, bossy, and possessive…AND loves to exert her power over her willing sister. I’m still learning that no two kids are alike, and in my case, my girls are like night and day in some areas. Ashlyn used to tantrum when she didn’t get what she wanted, or if we didn’t understand her, or if we didn’t agree with her. She required (and continues to require) us to be emotionally nuturing. Summer, on the other hand, tantrums when she doesn’t get what she wants. She could care less what you think, but once it passes, it’s gone….*snap*…just like that, she accepts whatever it is and moves on. AWESOME! No need to explain or negotiate. So even though Summer is the naughtier of the two, I find her much easier to deal with.

whack-a-mole pro

You’ve heard me say this before, but I find Summer’s physical strength and coordination pretty amazing. My little daredevil climbs to, and jumps from, daring heights. She lifts and carries items far too heavy for her. And if we had a chandelier, you bet she’d be swinging from it. She can power the TV, DVD player, microwave, fridge water dispenser, telephone, cellphone, digital camera, and Leapster with ease. She’s figured out doorknobs and locks already. She can feed and dress herself, put on her own shoes, wash and dry her own hands/face, apply lotion and chapstick, and brush her own teeth.
On the flipside, she’s prone to injury. Not the usual bumps and bruises I’m used to, but the kind that makes me go weak in the knees…like when she bit through her lower lip in Taiwan, or when she split her upper lip at Target, or when she had a bump the size of a golf ball on her forehead, or the time she fell head-first into the koi pond. *sigh* My biggest fear is of her knocking out a tooth before it falls out on it’s own, broken bones, and/or stitches. *knock on wood*.

pretty

I always used to joke that Summer has the face and personality only her mother could love. hahaha That’s because she’s not particularly nice to strangers (or some friends), nor does she go out of her way to make them happy. But once you get past her serious and quiet stone face, Summer is such a character! When she warms up, she’s sweet, exuberant, fiercely protective, loyal, and a total comedian. Ever so slowly I’m noticing that she’s becoming more outgoing and friendly….slooooowly.
Nevertheless, she brings us a lot of happiness and laughter, and we just adore her to bits! I’m looking forward to seeing her blossom and grow more!

smiles

Summer is looking forward to her party. Today I caught her singing “Happy Birthday” followed by the blowing motion. HAHAHAHA!

summer, ashlyn, and cade

Tonight we went to Cade’s birthday party at Pump It Up, and my lil’ one totally impressed me with her bravery, physical strength, and coordination!
Summer climbed up and slid down the HUMONGOUS slide all by herself ! She did it a couple of times before I remembered to whip out my camera. Check it out!

…must come down.”

Ashlyn avoided the Big Slide altogether as she has been doing the past few times we’ve gone (still in her ‘fraidy cat phase), but had tons of fun in the Jousting Ring tumbling, jumping, falling, and pretending to be ‘Power Rangers Mystic Force’. HAHAHA!

Too bad Aric had class and missed all the fun.
